Last year at this time Red Elvis was a bit ‘miffed, ‘ all the way to Chiang Rai on his elvis-style motorbike, to buy some coffee and he comes back empty handed! One fifty for a kilo of parchment, that’s just out of order, 220 kilo for green coffee beans processed and left to grow moldy, and a bad case of buyer’s remorse, and a sore butt from riding up a bunch of moutains. This year it’s raining and the cost of ‘cherry’ is down to 17 baht a kilo, so a kilo of green coffee bean, say at 7-1 ratio is about 150 baht per kilo (if it ever dries). Red Elvis get’s his revenge, and he’d much rather drink Sumatra anyway, and this year the tax is down to 5%. Maybe he’ll ride the big bike into Laos. The coffee is much better there, Elvis needs it.
