The Lady Who Sells The Pork, or The Cowboy Hat Lady (Thailand)

the woman who sells the porkShe been there forever, or at least close to forever. She’s ageless, for someone who has been in the same spot for many years, selling the same thing, the one thing that she does best and that everyone seems to love…

Last night there was a line, not just any old line, plenty of them here in Chiang Mai. This one was a real honest to God line, with people and cars, old folks, young’ins, babies in strollers, college kids, and assorted tourists and expats. There was me and the wife waiting, but then, we weren’t going anywhere so we decided to sit…and observe.

Some would say that she got lucky, that she was at the right place at the right time. Others would disagree, saying it’s the food man, it’s really good, and she does the one things she does better than anyone else. Still others would tell you it’s because of CNN doing that picture story, but who really watches CNN anyway…

She’s a legend in Chiang Mai, and she’s probably got more money then God, and she has her hands in the stuff she sells all day–which isn’t really pleasant if you really think about it.

I, among others, think it’s the cowboy hate, I mean you don’t see many women wearing cowboy hates in Chiang Mai, and she wears it so well, I bet she’s got dozens of them hanging around in her house, or her mansions, or whatever she calls her home.

pork 2Pure Chiang Mai calls her the Cowboy lady Khao Kha Moo. There is something to be said about making only one thing and making it well, and selling it for about a dollar to about 500 hundred people a night 365 days a year. Enough said.

So what does she sell? Well it’s pork shank over rice, served with a duck egg. It’s a popular Thai dish, and you can get it just about anywhere. Keep telling yourself it’s just the hat–and I’m saying this because out in Hang Dong where I live there is a woman who doesn’t wear a hat but her Khao Kha Moo is better. It’s just the hat, that hat, and I hear she wears high heels, at least that’s what CNN says.

So if your near the North Gate and you happen to feel a bit hungry, give it a try. Look for the lady….
